Tips For Teaching Kids To Safely Operate ATVs

August is Family Fun Month and enjoying time together outdoors is a great way to have all kinds of family fun while making lasting memories to share. Our ATV dealership in Southwest Missouri offers ATVs in a variety of sizes for all ages. The experts at LSK Lebanon can help you find the right Powersports vehicles for your family but before picking one up, you should make sure everyone knows how to safely operate an ATV.

ATVs are not toys (even though they are so much fun, you feel like a big kid with the most awesome toy ever!) Riders need to understand that these are powerful vehicles. A person needs to be mature enough to take on the responsibility of riding safely. The following tips will help you get the whole family prepared.

Prepare Yourself, Then the Kids
Even if you've been riding ATVs your entire life, each one can be slightly different. You as the parent should read the owners manual to familiarize yourself with the ATVs in Southern Missouri that you have purchased. Take note of warning labels on the actual ATV and get familiar with the controls.

Once you're ready, take your child through the same plan. The more they know before even getting on the ATV, the better chance they have of staying safe and becoming a good driver. ATV safety courses are also available that you can take together.

Size Matters
ATVs are available in five different categories. Adult-sized ATVs come in either sport or utility. The other three types pertain to younger riders. These are designed for the smaller hands and feet of children. They are also lighter and travel at slower speeds that are age-appropriate for learning. Safety labels stating the minimum age for riders on a particular vehicle are visible on the ATV when seated in the proper operating position.

Enforce Rules
Having a set of house rules that all riders in the family must follow is a great way to keep safety first and foremost. Here are a few you can include.

  • ALWAYS wear the proper, well-fitted helmet and other safety gear, like goggles, long sleeves, long pants, boots, and gloves.
  • Only use the vehicle appropriate for your age.
  • ATVs are off-road vehicles. Never drive on paved roads unless crossing in a safe, designated spot.
  • Parents are in charge of ATV keys. No one under the age of 16 should ride unsupervised.
  • No more riders at a time than the ATV is designed for.
  • No friends on the vehicle without adult supervision and permission from the friend's parents.

You can find the perfectly-sized ATVs as well as the proper safety gear at our Southern Missouri Powersports dealership. Our website will give you an idea of what we have in store, but stopping by LSK Lebanon in person is the best way to get questions answered and decide exactly which vehicles are best for you and your family.
