May is Water Safety Month
Warmer weather is here, and summer is just days away. Soon you’ll likely be planning out vacations and trips. Boating season is here and if you have already bought a watercraft from our boat dealer in Lebanon, MO, you will be getting your boats out and ready for days playing on the water or fishing trips with the boys. For Water Safety Month LSK Lebanon would like to give you a few tips to stay safe while out on the water this summer.
Safety Gear
Having the right gear in your boat is essential. Having life jackets, fire extinguishers and whistle or airhorn on board are required by law in the state of Missouri. If you are traveling outside the state. It is smart to see if those states requirements are different than Missouri.
Common Sense
Possibly the most important safety tip is to use common sense. Be aware and always operate at a safe speed. Be alert in large crowds and pay attention to navigational buoys.
Be Weather Alert
Make it a point to check the weather before launching the vessel and taking off for the day. As we all know Missouri weather can change rapidly. Getting caught out in a storm can be very dangerous for you and your passengers.
Plan Your Day
Make a friend or family member aware of your plan. Let them know where you are going, how long you will be gone and who will be on board.
Use a Checklist
Create a checklist and follow it as a pre-launch routine. On this list write down your list of safety gear and make sure it is all in your boat. Make a safety checklist and ensure your boat is water ready before launch.
Designate Assistant Operator
Chose someone to operate the boat if the main operator becomes unable. This person should be familiar with the boat and all rules and regulations. If alcohol is part of your boating plans, be responsible as the probability of being involved in a boating accident is doubled when alcohol is involved. Always designate a captain, if you plan on drinking out on the water.
Missouri Boating Education Course
In the state of Missouri all operators born after January 1, 1984 must have a Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card to legally operate a motorized vessel on any Missouri Lake. The course can be taken online for $24.50; the state also has a $17 fee and then you can print out the completion document. Motorboat operators must be 14 years of age unless under the direct supervision of a person 16 years or older. There is no minimum age requirement to take the online course and you do not have to be a resident of Missouri. This is a great course and has a lot of useful information included.
