Interesting Facts About Why We Celebrate Memorial Day

A lot of people simply see Memorial Day Weekend as a 3-day holiday to get outdoors and have some fun. While it is a great time to do just that, Memorial Day itself also has a much deeper significance.

Before you head out to your BBQs, days out on the lake, or a long ride on the open road, LSK Lebanon has a few interesting facts about this special holiday to share with you. Hopefully, these will enhance your celebration as well as your appreciation for the holiday.

MEMORIAL DAY FUN FACTS

* Originally Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day. Back in the 1880s, surviving soldiers of the Civil War honored their fallen comrades by decorating their graves with flags and flowers.

* People began referring to the holiday as Memorial Day in 1882 but the name did not officially change until it was legally changed in 1967.

* According to the Library of Congress, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, as the birthplace of Memorial Day because of a celebration the town held in 1866. Other places dispute this, claiming their towns were celebrating the holiday long before this.

* For many years this holiday was observed every year on May 30. Congress decided that some holidays should always fall on a Monday to allow a 3-day weekend. In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act came into effect and changed the date of Memorial Day to fall on the last Monday of May each year.

* Many know that American flags should be flown at half-staff on Memorial Day, but most people don't realize at noon they should immediately be raised to full-staff! This tradition reminds us to spend part of the day remembering the fallen and the other part of the day enjoying the freedoms that they made a reality for us.

* Another tradition that not everyone is aware of was made into a law by Congress in the year 2000. President Bill Clinton signed the National Moment of Remembrance Act which states that at 3:00 pm on Memorial Day, local time, all Americans must pause and take a moment to remember the brave men and women that fought for our freedom.
