6 Winter Time Boating Tips

LSK in Lebanon, MO is here for all of your winter boating tips! Just because the weather is colder, and the season has changed doesn’t mean that you can’t still do your favorite past time activity of boating. You can absolutely still boat in the wintertime as long as you’re taking the correct measures. One of the big perks of having an outboard motor is that it can be used year-round without the need to winterize in the cold months. There are going to be some differences between boating in the summer and boating in the winter. However, by following these safety tips, you’ll learn how to safely boat all year-round! Follow along for all of our tips on boating in the winter at Lake of the Ozarks!

Tip 1: Keep the Battery Charged

Your battery will drain much more quickly in the cold weather. You do not want to end up with a dead battery in the middle of the cold lake. Get yourself a battery charger to keep on board in case of a dead battery emergency.

Tip 2: Change the Oil

Even when storing your boat out of the water in the winter, we highly suggest you still change or empty your motor oil. If you’re planning on boating all year-found, then it’s even more important to change your oil!

Tip 3: Check the Drains

All year it’s important to check all of your drains for leaks and ensure that seals are good, and plugs are in place. If water leaks into the boat from below, then it could cause serious damage and slick surfaces. This could be particularly unsafe for children or elderly family members.

Tip 4: Watch for Ice

If you’re brave enough to venture out on the lake in some of our more brutal low temps, it’s important to remember to watch for ice in the water. There could be large chunks of ice right under the water that could be hard to spot. Make sure you’re keeping an eye out!

Tip 5: Bundle Up

You’ll want to fully bundle yourself up to brace for the cold! We suggest a hat, gloves, coat, scarf, and warm socks. In addition, you could also plan on keeping a blanket or two on board to keep you and your family warm.

Tip 6: Bring Your Phone

Make sure that you remember to bring your fully charged phone with you on board! If there were to be an emergency, having a phone on board could be crucial in getting you help as soon as possible.
