EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: How to Prepare in Case of Emergency for Boaters

There are so many precautions boaters can take to lower their risk of danger. However, no matter how many precautions we take, sometimes the worst can occur. When the worst does occur, we always want to be prepared because the one downside to boating is help is a little further away when you’re out in the middle of a body of water.

Once getting your boat from your local boat dealer near mid-Missouri, it’s important for you to receive as many details as possible about the boat, such as, make, model, compartments for lifejackets, etc. These are details that are crucial to know when preparing your boat for emergencies.

At LSK Lebanon, our biggest concern is your safety and your enjoyment boating for a long time coming.

Prepare an Emergency Kit for Your Boat

Just like your car or your home, you always want to make sure you have an emergency kit on hand to easily access. Here’s an idea of a list of items to include:

·         Flares

·         Paddle

·         Communication device, such as, a VHF radio

·         Signaling device (i.e. mirror, horn)

·         Rope

·         First aid kit

·         Fire extinguisher

You can add any items you find necessary to this list.

Important Considerations Before Departing

Not all factors can be controlled, such as, passengers’ health conditions or another boater, etc. However, your risk of danger can be lowered significantly when taking precautions before getting on your boat. Here are other items to assess before departing:

·         How busy the Lake is: Sometimes extremely busy days or holidays can be a recipe for disaster. As long as you know how to maneuver your vehicle and have emergency plans set in place, you should be good to go. Keep an extra eye out when the water is busy.

·         Check the weather: Stormy or rough conditions are normally a good sign to avoid the water.

·         Monitor water temperatures: The temperature of the water will help you decipher how long you or your passengers would be able to survive in the water while waiting for help. This is something that we don’t need to worry about most of the time in mid-Missouri lakes, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

In the future, LSK Lebanon will feature blogs to go over evacuation plans and how to get help in case of emergency. For now, it’s more crucial to have the necessary supplies in case the unplanned or uncontrollable occur. Happy boating and have a safe Labor Day weekend!
