THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE RIDING YOUR ATV FOR THE 1ST TIME

As we all start new hobbies in life, we always have different expectations for how these hobbies will go. It’s best to prepare in advance before jumping all in. In fact, safety preparation is most important before beginning any new activity to ensure you don’t get injured. Injury on the first go of a new hobby instills fear in most of us.

Riding ATVs for the first time, in specific, is important to learn safety precautions, first. Once you purchase your ATV from your local dealer in Lebanon, MO, you can start practicing the ins and outs of the vehicle before riding.

LSK Lebanon put together an itemized list of things you need to know before driving your ATV for the first time. This is what we call a “pre-ride inspection.” It’s not as easy as hopping on your brand-new ATV and riding off. Below we have listed out things that need to be checked before your first ride.

1. Check the condition of your tires
Something that is overlooked by most riders is to check the condition of your tires before each ride. You need to make sure there are no cuts or holes in the tires where air might be seeping out. Preventing this will help you not to end up with flat tires in the middle of a ride.

2. Check tire air pressure
Learn your tires recommended air pressure whether it be from us at LSK or from the tire manufacturer. Then, you’ll always want to check your tire air pressure before each ride and make sure it’s at that suggested air pressure each time.

3. Test the brakes
The controls that power the brakes must be checked for smooth operation. These controls also must be adjusted so that the position of the controls and the engagement point are correct as described by the owner’s manual.

4. Make sure throttle is working
Test the throttle for smooth operation, as well. It should always snap close no matter the position of the handlebars. If your vehicle has a throttle limiter, adjust it specific to the rider.

5. Check oil or fuel leaks
Either read your owner’s manual or ask your local dealer how you can check your oil and fuel tanks for any leaks that way it can be fixed immediately.

There are other things that you will learn to check your vehicle for the more experienced you become. However, starting off with a new vehicle, not everything is necessary. As you navigate your riding experience with ATVs, LSK Lebanon is always here to help with anything we can.
