5 SIMPLE BOATING TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED

Imagine this – you got a new boat near Lebanon, MO for your family to enjoy this summer. Your eyes are closed, the warm and the summer wind is running through your hair.

This doesn’t just have to be imaginary. In fact, a lot of people live this reality throughout the summertime here. We’re your biggest advocates to reach this summer goal.

However, in order to enjoy your time on the water, there needs to be an essential routine you get down before you set sail. It may not sound fun, at first, but it will be when your hair is windblown, and your skin is freshly tanned from being out all day.

LSK Lebanon has put together a list of five essential, but simple items in order to get you started on your first boat.

1.       SAFETY COMES FIRST

Of course, you knew safety was going to be one of the essential items. If you don’t know where to start, we got you covered.

Upon receiving your boating license, the items they label as “best practices,” DO THEM. They do not just tell you these boating practices for fun. They are meant to prevent any danger aboard and to save a passenger’s life if something were to happen. To ensure everyone has a good time and you, as the captain is stress-free, put these practices into place right away.

Life vests are another super important essential to have on your boat at all times. It’s especially suggested that little ones are always wearing one. There should be an equal ratio of life vests to passengers. Store them in an easy to reach place in case of emergency.

Exit plans are most commonly overlooked, yet crucial to the safety and ease of your boating experience. Before sailing for the first time, create an exit plan in order to prepare for the worst-case scenario. That way, IF something unplanned occurs, you and your passengers already know what to do.

2.       CHECK THE WEATHER IN ADVANCE

Our most experienced boaters always express that weather is the number one rule before setting out. As we all know, weather can affect a lot of outdoor activities. Boating on the lake is not mutually exclusive.

It’s usually best to check day of for the most accurate weather reading and to be sure that there are no forecasts of stiff winds or thunderstorms. In that case, it’s best to stay inside watching Titanic.

3.PRE-DEPARTURE CHECKLIST

The more boating experienced gained, the more knowledge that comes. There will come a time where you accumulate your own very specific checklist before docking. Here’s a basic checklist to get you started:

·         Always account extra time for docking and anchoring

·         Prepare/pack things in case of emergency (i.e. life vests, flares, sound producing devices)

·         Enough fuel/oil for the allotted distance planned to travel

·         Extra batteries

4.       INVOLVE EVERYONE ABOARD

It’s hard to maintain your boat and do all tasks while boating alone. When passengers are present, put them to work! Delegate simple tasks to family and friends and make sure they stick to it. Not only does this take weight off your shoulders, but also, it gives others an opportunity to learn and have fun.

5.       HAVE FUN!

Do we need to explain much here?

The whole point of purchasing a boat in Mid-Missouri, most of the time, is to have fun. That’s the one rule we want to make sure you stick by.

The safety, rules, and preparation are routines we want to become routine, so your biggest worry is if your family is enjoying the Lake.

These five points we put together are rule of thumb we noticed experienced boaters to follow. We want your first experience with your brand-new boat to be as easy-going, as possible.

Here at LSK Lebanon, we want you to love the boat life just as much as we do.
