How to Find the Perfectly Sized Helmet for Motorcycles & Dirt Bikes

A properly fitting helmet is one of the most important items you can purchase to keep yourself safe while riding a motorcycle or dirt bike. Upon first shopping the helmets at our Southwest Missouri Powersports dealership in Lebanon, MO, you may be tempted to begin looking for the most attractive and least expensive options.

We have plenty of those for you to choose from at LSK Lebanon, so no worries there, but those are not the most important factors for finding the right helmet. In the end, it won't matter what it looks like as long as it keeps you safe, which all boils down to that helmet fitting as perfectly as possible.

An improperly fitting helmet can put you at risk instead of protecting you as it should. The best fit should feel comfortable and allow you to safely maneuver the vehicle. When a helmet is too big it could come off in a crash or move around while riding and impair your vision. A helmet that is too small can also make it harder to see and the discomfort can be a huge distraction. Here are some tips to help you find your perfect helmet.

Know Your Head Shape
Figuring out the shape of your head can be very helpful in deciding on which helmet to buy. There are generally 3 different shapes you can classify yourself with.

Oval is probably the most common head shape. Some are round, meaning slightly shorter and wider in the middle than an oval. Others are egg-shaped, being wider at the top and narrower at the bottom.

Take Your Measurements
Measure the circumference of your head with a flexible measuring tape. Wrap it around the fullest part of your head. This will be above the ears, about a half-inch to 1-inch above the eyebrows. Take the measurement at the forehead.

Next, you'll want to match that number to the size chart of the brand you are considering. Each manufacturer has sizing charts specific to their own models and may vary slightly from brand to brand.

Try It On
As a matter of fact, you should try on quite a few helmets to get a feel for how they each sit on your head. A helmet should be slightly tight when you first wear it. Don't let it be so tight is causes discomfort but snug enough to not move around easily. After using it for a while and it's broken in, the helmet will adjust to the shape of your head. (Just be aware in the future if it ever becomes too loose.)

You want a helmet that does not move freely on its own when you shake your head from side to side. There should be no places where it puts excessive pressure on your face or skull. It should sit evenly with the eye port's upper edge just above the eyebrows and you want to make sure it allows for good peripheral vision. Adjusting the size of the pads inside the helmet can help you find a better fit too.

When you come into our motorcycle dealership in Southwest Missouri we will be happy to help you find the helmet that fits best. A top priority of ours at LSK Lebanon is to make sure you stay safe so that you may enjoy riding for many, many years to come.
